Chelan School District shares their Universal Design for Learning journey with Rose Racicot, OT and AT Specialist with SETC. The conversation is about the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) initiative that the district has implemented. The initiative is led by a partnership between the director of teaching and learning and the director of inclusion or special education.
The district has modeled the UDL initiative at the district level and emphasizes that UDL is a tier one effort and is for all students. The UDL framework should be recognized as an all-encompassing framework for designing learning experiences, engaging communities and families, and designing professional learning. The main advice for other districts is to get key coordinators in the room, including the highly capable coordinator, director of teaching and learning, special education director, EL coordinator, as UDL has direct application to all student populations.
